Richard Wills, MD – Sleep Consultant

Richard Wills, MD is a Board-Certified Internist and Certified Sleep Coach who specializes in helping adults recover from insomnia and rediscover natural, sound sleep. Drawing on both his medical background and his personal experience of decades with insomnia, Richard offers clients at TaperClinic a unique blend of clinical insight, lived experience, and compassionate support.

At TaperClinic, Richard leads group sessions focused on teaching behavioral and lifestyle strategies to improve sleep, while supporting individuals managing insomnia related to a psychiatric drug taper. He is also developing a structured education program for patients to access outside of his virtual meetings. 

For 20 years, Richard served as director of internal medicine at a psychiatric hospital, overseeing patient care and working closely with individuals facing complex medical and psychiatric challenges. Now semi-retired from medicine, he wears his coach’s hat rather than his doctor’s, focusing on the practical and emotional challenges of insomnia recovery.

Richard’s professional path is deeply shaped by his personal one. His difficulties with sleep began in medical school, when overnight calls triggered a fear of sleeplessness. Like many, he tried medications, supplements, gadgets, and countless other remedies, only to find himself more stuck. It wasn’t till he understood the role of hyperarousal—the brain’s fight-or-flight system—that things began to change. By approaching wakefulness with less fear and resistance, he gradually regained the ability to sleep naturally for the first time in years.

Since becoming certified as a sleep coach in 2023, Richard has supported hundreds of people on their insomnia recovery journey. His style is warm, practical, and grounded in empathy, always focused on helping clients rediscover confidence in their body’s natural capacity to sleep.

Based in Denver, Colorado, Richard enjoys hiking in the nearby Rocky Mountains, spending time with friends, keeping up with world events, and immersing himself in a good book. 

He’s passionate about helping others follow in his footsteps by putting insomnia to rest and enjoying the peaceful sleep they deserve.
