Lives Reclaimed Through Safe Deprescribing
These stories highlight the courage of patients who took back their lives after psychiatric drug harm—with support from the TaperClinic team.
Every day at TaperClinic, we witness quiet victories—symptoms easing, confidence returning, lives rebuilding. In this short video, our team reflects on some of the most powerful and inspiring moments we’ve shared with clients. These stories are reminders that healing is real, progress is possible, and no one walks this path alone. Whether it’s a message from a client celebrating their first full night of sleep in years or the joy of a graduation day, these reflections offer a window into what’s possible when care is personalized, compassionate, and grounded in belief.
Psychiatric Drug Tapering with TaperClinic
After researching a series of seemingly unrelated health issues, it became apparent that the benzodiazepine I had been prescribed for insomnia—and had been taking for over a decade—was the likely culprit. The doctor who prescribed the medication agreed to let me taper off, but at a rate that was debilitating, so I needed a doctor who would assist me with the taper, not just allow me to do it. I found the Drs. Witt-Doerring on the website of a nonprofit that advocates for individuals who have been harmed by benzodiazepines taken as prescribed, and from the first phone call, I knew I had found the right doctors. I had the pleasure of working with both Dr. Josef and Dr. Marissa, and they were my supporters, and even my cheerleaders, from the start. They heard me, they allowed me to taper at a pace that was comfortable for me, and they were always available to answer questions and offer support. I finished my taper and am thrilled to have my life back. I feel better than I have in many, many years, and I have the Drs. Witt-Doerring to thank for that. I can’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t found them. Having doctors who you can trust when navigating a mental health challenge that leaves you feeling vulnerable is invaluable, and I trust the Drs. Witt-Doerring implicitly. Needless to say, I would highly recommend them to anyone facing a mental health challenge.
During the initial year of COVID I started taking Xanax and became increasingly dependent on it. Based on past experiences, the thought of stopping cold turkey was absolutely terrifying and although I genuinely wanted to stop, I felt trapped by the prospect of imminent and horrible withdrawal. Thanks to Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring, I found an understanding, nonjudgmental and surprisingly effective way to wean myself off with virtually none of the issues I had so dreaded. I’m over the moon that I have successfully become benzo free with no interruptions to work or life in general. I’d highly recommend Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring to help you get back to where you want to be!
I was initially a patient of Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring and later Dr. Josef. I would highly recommend both of them. I also received support from one of their taper coaches, Trudy. She was great, too. I decided I wanted to taper a couple years ago when I realized that the mirtazapine I was taking was harming my health. I initially approached my primary care doctor for help since she was the prescriber. Although she meant well, she didn’t understand how to taper it safely, and she had me stop much too quickly. As a result, I became severely ill from withdrawal. At that point, none of my doctors knew what to do. Luckily, that’s when I found the Witt-Doerrings’ practice and became one of their patients. They helped me stabilize on a reinstatement dose. Then, they worked with me to redo the taper at a slower pace. They checked in often and adjusted the taper speed based on my withdrawal symptoms. There were some ups and downs during the withdrawal — that’s just part of the process — but I felt supported every step of the way. Because the taper was handled so carefully, the withdrawal symptoms were kept to a minimum. When I finished tapering mirtazapine, I then tapered bupropion. I am now completely off antidepressants for the first time in years, and my health is improving. I’ve lost about 20 pounds, I’m sleeping better, and my mood is more stable. My dysautonomia symptoms, which used to be quite disabling, have reduced significantly. I have some chronic health conditions, so I see a lot of doctors. I can say hands down that this is the best medical practice I’ve ever been a patient of. Everyone who works here is an expert on what they do. They take a whole person approach to health, and they genuinely care about their patients.
Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring was a great help in getting over my anxiety issues at the same time as slowly stopping usage of anti-anxiety medication. She clearly laid out the path forward and helped me along it one step at a time. I would recommend Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring for anyone looking to make a change but struggling with how to make that happen.
I reached out to Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring during a challenging and confusing time. I heard back quickly and was treated with respect and empathy which was a great comfort with what was going on at the time. I was fearful when I reached out. I appreciate the calm demeanor and levelheaded truthfulness when working with them. I have found them quick to respond and if something comes up. Their consistency of care has been helpful and comforting. They will work with you to find treatment and care options that fit your specific needs. As I write this, what comes to mind that they really hear me. The questionnaires and comments are actually read, and what you say is taken seriously and considered. I always feel heard.

TaperClinic 44 Google reviewsPosted on Jennifer WagnerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A "YEAR-LONG HOME REHAB" — Justifiable care in a broken system I’ve noticed reviews focused on the Taper Clinic’s $25-30k annual fee. As a current patient, I want to offer context on why this isn't predatory—it's a high-stakes clinical safety net that the standard medical system simply isn't built to handle. Is it fair? No. Is it the clinic's fault? Also no. THE ECONOMIC REALITY OF DEPRESCRIBING Most people don't realize that it is medically "cheaper" and lower risk for a doctor to keep you on a pill than to take you off one. Prescribing takes 10 minutes. REMOVING a long-term medication is a high-risk engineering project that requires managing neuro-adaptation and withdrawal. The Taper Clinic assumes a level of clinical liability and malpractice risk that standard insurance-based doctors won't touch. WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY PAYING FOR: THE "BRAIN TRUST": You aren't just paying for the time you’re on a call. Behind the scenes, a multitude of specialists—including Dr. Josef, Dr. Gideon, Trudy Slaught, Hannah Kaye, Dr. Willis, and Sheila Wojciechowski—regularly meet "off-hours" to collaborate and meticulously plan your specific taper. And this doesn’t even count the other specialists I have access to. You are paying for a collective intelligence, not just an appointment. TRUE FAMILY PARTNERSHIP: Every specialist here knows my family by name. They’ve even acted as a "healthcare quarterback," helping us find specialized functional care for my son—support that is nearly impossible to find in a traditional clinic. THE "HOME REHAB" MODEL: High-end residential detoxes often cost $30k+ for ONE MONTH and then inevitably fail because the tapers are too fast. The Taper Clinic takes that same budget and stretches it over 12 months of intensive, 24/7 outpatient monitoring. A NOTE ON THE COST Is $30k astronomical? Yes. Is it unfair that this level of care isn't accessible to everyone? Absolutely. Insurance SHOULD cover this, and it is a tragedy of our modern healthcare system that safe, slow deprescribing is gated behind such a high price tag. We live in an unfair world where the cost of high-quality, life-saving healthcare is out of reach for many, but that is a failure of the system—not the clinic. They are doing the difficult, high-liability work that the rest of the medical system refuses to do.Posted on Leonard FasslerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The Taper Clinic was just "what the doctor ordered". The team especially Dr. Chris, Dr. Josef and Trudy provided a safe and nurturing place for handling the culprits around pharmaceutical dependency. It's easy to take for granted that since you're paying big bucks you're going to get the care you need but that's not always the case. The Taper Clinic however does! I'm a couple months in on a probable 10 -12 month journey toward recovering my sleep naturally. Put the work in, utilize the tools available from the clinic and be patient. Those seem to be the Rx for success!Posted on Stephanie PirieTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My 37 year old son is autistic/Aspergers. It was 22 years ago, by the age of 16, that he was the target of bullying. Additionally he experienced great stress in coping with all the transitions that come with high school. He began to come home falling apart into crying and was very sad and depressed. We were told he was "clinically" depressed and that he needed medication to resolve it. Not one professional in our life was counseling us to fix the root of his problem which was the stress of his social/educational environment. We reluctantly agreed to try meds. Within 3 days of being on Effexor, he had a complete break down ending up in the hospital. The meds the hospital had him on were never right. He never went back to baseline. 22 years later, he finally had to quit his job of 6 years and come home due to med side effects that were no longer manageable; including Tardive Diskenesia. We began the long process of coming off 8 medications, most if not all, that he probably did not need (we still have 2 left to go/adjust). Prior to Taper Clinic, the psychiatrists we had did their best to help get our son off the meds or at least adjust them correctly, but they used a "cut and hold" method of withdrawal. Extremely hard on our son to go through each cut as it brought on alot of miserable side effects. Almost 2 years into slowly withdrawing and still needing help; we found Taper Clinic online and began to listen to Dr. Josef Witt-Doerrings videos. We then realized that there was a better way to go about withdrawals, by using liquid; super tiny reductions daily. We joined in October of 2025 and our son is now able to cope with life while he is withdrawing. Taper Clinic's program is working extremely well. The staff helping us are wonderful and we are so grateful. We also joined this clinic in hopes that it would help to support Dr. Josef's work in educating the public on the dangers of these heavy duty psych meds, and how they are typically prescribed by doctors who are largely ignorant of the root issues of mood, and the long term side effects of meds due to the FDA and pharmaceutical companies giving the wrong impressions to doctors of safety; often spinning studies to downplay risks. Thank you Taper Clinic and may others hear and beware not to fall into a long term trap of poor prescribing/de-prescribing and ignorance that is so prevalent in the psych/med field. These guys really know what they are doing. And we just needed someone who knows what they are doing!!! We finally found it in Taper Clinic. Worth every penny we have had to spend to be here. What a relief!!! Thank you Dr. Josef and team. Please keep up the good work of educating the public on medication and de-prescribing.Posted on C PotharstTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. "Take the red pill"Posted on Dave GlennTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. TaperClinic is possibly saving my life…at least the quality of my life. I have been struggling with my Dr for years to assist me in tapering off of the meds he prescribed because I knew that’s what I needed and basically kept hitting a wall. I was aware of compound pharmacy’s and micro tapering and my Dr would not even entertain the idea of micro dosing. So, for me, TaperClinic has been a godsend! If you want your life back, I know of no other program that exists. It’s worth every penny……In fact I’d pay much more if that’s what or took.Posted on Megan MooreTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The Taper Clinic has exceeded my expectations/hopes in every way. Their method has been MUCH easier on my body, and their expertise is really impressive. Tapering can be a scary thing, and they have made it so much easier. I feel like I am in really good hands. It is worth every penny. A true life changer.Posted on R WTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Over 13 months, I was able to successfully & safely slowly taper benzodiazepines, Ambien & Trazadone. Dr. Josef, my coach Nicole & staff stood by me the entire time & walked me through this entire journey. Other provided services, such as healing guided meditation with Chris Paige & talk group sessions were a life line for me. My clarity is returning & the ability to communicate clearly. Anyone who has a benzo or SSRI injury knows how complicated, physically painful & frustrating it is to properly get off of these medications. I am beyond grateful for this clinic & thank you for helping me reclaim my life!!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
