Dr. J. Casey Guthrie is a board-certified psychiatrist, forensic psychiatrist, and biblical counselor. A guiding principle of his practice is that real problems need real doctors, and real doctors listen to their patients and look for root causes. Trained in both conventional and functional psychiatry, Dr. Guthrie brings together the rigor of clinical medicine, the precision of advanced laboratory science, and the depth of Christian faith to provide a kind of care that is still rare in American psychiatry: whole-person, individualized, and genuinely thorough.
Dr. Guthrie seeks to serve patients who have fallen through the gaps of conventional psychiatric care including those who have been handed a diagnosis and a prescription without ever being asked why, those who have tried medication after medication without lasting relief, and those who sense that something deeper is driving their symptoms but have never had a physician willing to go looking for it.
At TaperClinic, Dr. Guthrie helps patients safely taper and discontinue psychiatric medications through personalized, evidence-informed care. He has a particular interest in working with individuals who have not found lasting relief through conventional psychiatric treatment, including those struggling with medication side effects, treatment-resistant symptoms, complex medical histories, or psychiatric medication withdrawal. His approach combines careful clinical assessment with a deep understanding of the biological, psychological, and spiritual factors that influence mental health.
Dr. Guthrie earned his medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas before completing his psychiatry residency and serving as Chief Resident at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. He went on to complete a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at LSU, where he developed the methodical and evidence-based approach that continues to shape his clinical work today. More recently, he completed advanced training in Functional and Integrative Psychiatry under Dr. James Greenblatt, gaining specialized expertise in nutritional psychiatry, metabolic psychiatry, genetics, psychiatric medication tapering, and precision medicine.
He is especially passionate about helping patients who feel they have been overlooked, dismissed, or harmed by the mental health system. Rather than focusing solely on symptom suppression, he works to identify underlying contributors to mental distress, including nutritional deficiencies, metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and other biological factors that may impact brain health and emotional well-being.
In addition to his medical training, Dr. Guthrie integrates a Christian worldview into his understanding of human flourishing and healing. He recognizes that mental health challenges often affect every dimension of a person’s life and seeks to provide care that respects both the physical and non-physical aspects of the individual. His goal is to help patients move beyond simply managing symptoms and toward genuine restoration, resilience, and long-term wellness.
Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Guthrie enjoys studying theology, functional medicine, and human performance. He remains committed to advancing a model of psychiatry that is compassionate, scientifically rigorous, and deeply attentive to the whole person.
With a deep commitment to patient education, Dr. Witt-Doerring’s long-term mission is to create free high-quality educational content that empowers the general public to make informed decisions about their mental health care. Thanks to his extensive experience and highly specialized understanding of psychiatric interventions, patients can trust that they are in capable hands when seeking treatment for adverse drug reactions at his private practice.
