Christopher Gideon MD, MSc - Psychiatrist

Dr. Christopher Gideon is a psychiatrist who combines scientific rigor with genuine compassion for the people he serves. With a background in psychiatric drug design and child and adolescent care, he brings a thoughtful, integrative approach to psychiatry—one grounded in connection, curiosity, and respect for each person’s unique story. Dr. Gideon is especially passionate about helping patients taper off psychiatric medications safely and intentionally, guiding them toward a more authentic and sustainable experience of wellness.

At TaperClinic, Dr. Gideon serves as a clinical psychiatrist, working closely with patients to design safe, personalized tapering plans grounded in evidence and empathy. His approach is deeply informed by his own lived experience with psychiatric medication and withdrawal—an understanding that gives him uncommon insight into the challenges, fears, and victories patients encounter along the way. This personal perspective allows him to connect with patients not only as a clinician but also as someone who has walked a similar path. Dr. Gideon focuses on fostering trust, pacing tapers safely, and helping patients regain confidence in their body and mind’s innate capacity for balance and healing.

Before attending Chicago Medical School, Dr. Gideon completed a master’s degree in Neuropharmacology in the United Kingdom, where he studied psychiatric drug design. While conducting research on psychiatric medications, he came to appreciate the flawed process by which many drugs are developed, marketed, and brought into clinical use. After entering clinical practice, this understanding deepened as he witnessed how the reduction of human distress to chemical imbalances often misses the true sources of suffering—and, in many cases, can obscure the patient’s own capacity for healing.

Dr. Gideon completed his psychiatry residency at Michigan State University and went on to pursue a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, gaining further expertise working with both adults and youth. During his training, he observed many patients cycling through brief med-checks and repeated hospitalizations without meaningful improvement—only to leave with more prescriptions. Over time, it became impossible to ignore the moral tension of watching a system prioritize medication over genuine, human-centered care. These experiences—alongside his own early encounters with mental health treatment—deeply shaped Dr. Gideon’s commitment to reimagining psychiatry.

Outside of his clinical work, Dr. Gideon enjoys hiking new trails, spending time outdoors, and reading widely—from philosophy and neuroscience to history and spirituality. His personal experiences have fueled a lifelong passion for helping others regain agency in their healing journey and rediscover a deeper sense of meaning, purpose, and connection beyond medication.
